Pittsburgh’s penalty yards after a bye and on a normal week

, ,

Against what the season’s ratings expected, Pittsburgh was 21.5 yards under after a bye and 14.6 yards over on a normal week over its last 25 games, 2 games against 18. The plain averages are 39.5 and 78.8, a difference of 39.3. All 10 away games were on a normal week.

2 games after a bye is still too small a sample for the statistics to say much, but maybe you can find something if you squint.

Method

Read against .

  • Expected is an offense and a defense a team, fit over every game of its season between two teams in the table with the game being read left out, minus 0.8 in 2024, minus 2.1 in 2025, minus 1.3 in 2026 for the home team (the edge the fit finds once strength is in), nothing at a neutral site.
  • Each expected number is then fit to the season’s games: a game bears out about 44% in 2024, 45% in 2025, 27% in 2026 of the difference the model predicts.
  • The shuffle keeps the season’s shape: the games are cut in two where one date leaves the least variance, each game is read against its stretch, and the sides are shuffled only inside each stretch.
  • Bucknell has no other game in the table, so that game has no expected number and sits out the second figure.
  • 4 games in 2024 and 2025 and 2026 are neither after a bye nor on a normal week, and sit out.
